British Heart Foundation 'Mending Broken Hearts'

The Mending Broken Hearts Appeal is one of the most important fundraising efforts ever undertaken by the British Heart Foundation. Its goal is simple; to raise £ 50 million to fund the research that could literally "mend the broken hearts" of millions.

Located in the picturesque town of Godalming, The Wey Gallery is very proud to be amongst only 20 galleries Nationwide, and the only one listed in Surrey to be invited to support this appeal. The Wey Gallery features contemporary art, including many Royal Academicians whose work will be featured in the Portfolio along with a growing number of nationally acclaimed, painters, sculptors and ceramicists as well as local artists

A number of leading British artists have been approached to produce artwork based on the theme mending broken hearts. These artworks will then be auctioned, and also made into two limited edition portfolio of silkscreen prints to be sold, with both activities raising funds for the Appeal.

This extraordinary Art Appeal, pioneered by CCA Galleries and the British Heart Foundation is original in several ways; firstly because the artists are not just donating a piece of their work, but creating a new piece specifically for the cause. And secondly, because these artworks will not simply be sold to raise money, but will become icons for the Appeal when in reaches it’s public phase in 2011. The imagery produced will be used to advertise the Mending Broken Hearts Appeal, and will also be incorporated into a range of merchandise. The Royal Mail have also approved plans for a series of stamps featuring the imagery.

A truly remarkable group of artists have contributed to the project including Sir Peter Blake RA, Damien Hirst,  John Hoyland RA,  Brendan Neiland, Gavin Turk, Barbara Rae CBE RA, Jonathan Yeo,  Maggi Hambling and Marc Quinn. The artists have been given completely free-rein in what they produce, as long as it is inspired by "mending broken hearts", the result is a collection of artwork that, while based on a shared concept, reflects the diversity and personal style and approach of each of the artists. Consequently the portfolios range in ethos from sunny and heart-warming, to dark and mysterious, to witty and humorous: something to appeal to everyone! The original artworks donated vary from oils and acrylics on canvas to works on paper, collage etc. In many cases artists have chosen to create a design for their silkscreen print that varies from their original artwork, giving us an impressive array of imagery for the appeal.
