Since completing her MA at Winchester School of Art in 1997, Shazia Mahmood has developed a quite unique style of painting which combines inks and oil paints to capture rapidly changing light and weather effects and the majesty of scenery.
Shazia has been exhibiting for the past 15 years and has an extensive solo show career, her work is in various collections around the world. Her work is collected from clients from the U.S.A to New Zealand.
She has devoted her time to the exploration of a very specific and quite unique method of painting. Her process-based technique relies on the phenomenon of chromatography - the colour-separation reaction that occurs when two specific mediums interact. In her work the base medium is a layer of PVA glue on canvas. When inks are then applied the glue draws out the individual dyes to create a distinctive colour transition.
For the past few years Shazia has painted exclusively from an area around the Western Isles. She has been captivated by this area primarily because of the pure drama and the multitude of changing weather conditions – evoked through her intimate knowledge of the chromatic technique, allowing her to control the progress of each reaction to produce her desired visual result.
This new collection of work takes its inspiration from her favourite places -the West Coast of Scotland and the West coast of the USA.
