Alice Sheridan works from her London studio. She graduated in 1995 with a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design and had a successful career in London design studios. Over the last decade she has developed her approach to painting; mixing a looser enjoyment of paint with bolder graphic elements reintroduced after a period of printmaking where she used spit bite etching to introduce a more random approach to what is usually a very controlled and pre-considered process. She draws directly in the wild landscape of Dartmoor and finds these natural open spaces an essential balance with busy city living. Sketchbook studies form the basis for new paintings; sometimes directly but more often paintings are started with no final plan in mind. Working on a grouped series, painting begins with random marks and she uses these chance happenings and colours suggestions as the layers build to guide each painting. Using acrylic on cradled plywood panels allows layers to be sanded to reveal lower surfaces and marks made with oil pastel. These unexpected moments of discovery along the way mean the process stays an enjoyable challenge; how to allow this seemingly random process to evolve and also to bring a degree of control and composition to the work.

Over the last few years, Alice has exhibited regularly at Artists at Home open studios in Chiswick and art fairs and built a loyal following of repeat visitors and buyers. Her work has been selected for exhibition by The Royal Society of Painter Printmakers, The Mall Galleries and Beside the Wave gallery in London. In 2017 work was shortlisted by The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, long listed for The Secret Art Prize and used by Harlequin within images to launch their new range of luxury wallpapers. Her work was showcased with a feature in the Autumn edition of UKHandmade magazine.
